I’m really looking forward to speaking at the Gala Royale and supporting the fundraising for the new ARC facility. I reckon if we want to build a bright future, we need to learn from the past, and having those stories and records preserved is hugely important. Looking back on my sporting career history, it’s been one grand adventure, but these days I’m starting to feel a bit like an archive myself, perhaps even better suited to the collection!

As a born and bred Nelsonian, I always enjoy a great night out supporting our community, and this promises to be a fantastic evening.

A MESSAGE FROM YOUR GALA HOSTS

As kaitiaki of the Tasman Bays Heritage Trust collection, we have a responsibility to protect and preserve the stories, taonga, and heritage that connect our communities to the region’s past and future.

To complete the specialist shelving and relocation of the collection into a safe long-term home, we are currently facing a funding shortfall of nearly $1.2 million. This investment will help ensure the collection remains protected, accessible, and meaningful for generations to come.

Recognising the scale of this important project, the Trustees have launched a programme of fundraising initiatives to help bridge the gap. The Royale Gala, our inaugural black tie fundraising dinner, marks the beginning of that journey.

More than just an event, the Royale Gala is an opportunity for our community, supporters, philanthropic partners, and local businesses to come together in support of a lasting regional legacy.

The ARC facility will be so much more than a storeroom - it’s our collective promise to protect the stories, taonga, and treasures that embody who we are. Every object we care for holds a piece of our region’s heart, and right now those precious treasures are at risk.

The new facility in Richmond will finally give us a safe, climate controlled home where these irreplaceable collections can endure for generations. When our community comes together at Gala Royale, we’re not just raising funds; we’re investing in our shared history and ensuring our children and grandchildren will still be able to touch, learn from and connect with it. This is a legacy project - one our future generations will be proud of.
